Why Is My AC Running But Not Cooling? Common Causes for Barrie Homeowners

It is one of the more frustrating problems a homeowner can run into during a Barrie summer: your air conditioner is clearly running — you can hear it, you can feel air moving from the vents — but the house just will not cool down. The thermostat says one thing and the temperature in the room says another.

The good news is that a few of the causes are simple enough to check yourself, and occasionally the fix is something you can handle in a few minutes. The rest require a professional, but knowing what you are looking at helps you decide which situation you're in. Here are the most common reasons an AC runs without cooling, roughly in order from simplest to most serious.


1. A Dirty or Clogged Air Filter

This is the most common cause, and the easiest to rule out, so it is the first thing to check.

When your air filter is packed with dust and debris, it restricts the airflow your system depends on. The AC keeps running, but it cannot move enough air across its components to cool your home effectively. In bad cases, restricted airflow can even cause the evaporator coil to freeze (more on that below).

Pull your filter and hold it up to a light. If you can't see through it, replace it. Filters are inexpensive, available anywhere in Barrie, and easy to swap yourself. If a clogged filter was the problem, you should notice improved cooling within a few hours. Getting in the habit of checking it monthly during cooling season prevents this one entirely.


2. Thermostat Settings

It sounds almost too simple, but thermostat issues are a genuinely common culprit.

Make sure the thermostat is set to "Cool" and not just "Fan" — the fan setting circulates air without actually cooling it, which produces exactly the "running but not cooling" symptom. Check that the temperature is set below the current room temperature, and if you have a programmable or smart thermostat, make sure a schedule isn't overriding your settings. Dead thermostat batteries can also cause erratic behaviour, so if the screen is dim or blank, that's worth ruling out too.


3. A Dirty Condenser Unit

Your outdoor unit — the condenser — is responsible for releasing the heat your system pulls out of your home. It sits outside all season, which means it collects grass clippings, leaves, dust, pollen, and whatever else the yard throws at it.

When the condenser coils are caked in debris, the system can't release heat efficiently, and cooling performance drops. Take a look at your outdoor unit. If it's surrounded by tall grass, buried in leaves, or visibly dirty, that's likely contributing. You can gently clear away debris and vegetation from around the unit and rinse the exterior fins carefully with a hose on low pressure. Give it at least two feet of clearance on all sides.

If the coils are heavily fouled or the fins are bent, that's a job for a professional — aggressive cleaning can damage the delicate fins and cause more harm than good.


4. A Frozen Evaporator Coil

Here's a counterintuitive one: your AC can stop cooling because part of it has frozen over.

The evaporator coil, located in the indoor unit, can develop a layer of ice when airflow is restricted or refrigerant is low. Once it's iced up, the system can't absorb heat from your home's air, so it runs and runs without cooling. Sometimes you'll notice reduced airflow from the vents, or visible ice on the refrigerant line near the indoor unit.

If you suspect a frozen coil, turn the system off and let it thaw — running it while frozen can damage the compressor, which is the most expensive component in the whole system. Switching the thermostat to "Fan only" can help speed the thaw. Once it's thawed, a fresh filter sometimes resolves it. But if it freezes again, that points to a deeper issue — often low refrigerant — that needs a professional.


5. Low Refrigerant or a Refrigerant Leak

Refrigerant is the substance that actually carries heat out of your home. If your system is low on it — almost always because of a leak, since refrigerant isn't "used up" in normal operation — it can't cool effectively no matter how hard it runs.

Signs of low refrigerant include weak cooling, a frozen coil that keeps coming back, hissing or bubbling sounds, and a system that runs constantly without reaching the set temperature.

This is firmly a professional repair. Refrigerant is regulated, requires certification to handle, and a leak needs to be properly located and sealed before the system is recharged — simply topping it up without fixing the leak just delays the problem. If low refrigerant is the cause, this is where a service call comes in.


6. A Failing Compressor or Electrical Issue

The compressor is the heart of your air conditioner — it's what actually drives the cooling cycle. When it starts to fail, or when there's an electrical problem with a capacitor, contactor, or the wiring, the system may run partially or run without producing cold air.

These issues aren't something a homeowner can diagnose or fix safely, but they're worth being aware of, because they explain why some "running but not cooling" problems can't be solved with a filter or a hose. If you've ruled out the simpler causes above, an electrical or compressor issue becomes more likely.

Here's a simple way to think about it. The homeowner-friendly checks — the filter, the thermostat, clearing debris from the condenser, thawing a frozen coil — are worth trying first, and they resolve a meaningful share of "running but not cooling" complaints. Start there.

But if you've worked through those and your AC still isn't cooling, the cause is likely refrigerant, the compressor, or an electrical component — none of which are DIY territory. Call for service if you notice any of these:

  • The system runs constantly and never reaches the set temperature
