## Warranty

**What labour warranty comes with new equipment?**
SMHC installs come with a 2-year labour warranty, transferable to a new homeowner.

**What manufacturer's parts warranty comes with new equipment?**
Equipment carries the manufacturer's parts warranty, which we register for the customer. It's registered to the original owner and may not carry over if you bought the home from someone else — we'll confirm what applies to your equipment.

**Does SMHC offer extended labour warranties?**
Yes — SMHC offers optional 10-year labour warranties. Annual maintenance by SMHC is required to keep a 10-year warranty in good standing.

**Is there a satisfaction guarantee?**
All products SMHC installs carry a "no lemon" guarantee.

**Does SMHC register the manufacturer's warranty?**
Yes — SMHC completes product registrations on all installed equipment.

**Will SMHC install equipment I bought myself?**
No — SMHC does not quote or install customer-supplied equipment, including units bought online or in a store.

**Can SMHC put a TSSA tag on equipment they didn't install?**
No — we only tag equipment we've sold and installed ourselves.

## Maintenance

**How often should I service my equipment?**
Once per year per piece of equipment.

**What if my unit was serviced within the last year?**
If it's been a year or less, SMHC can do a lighter check-up rather than a full maintenance.

**What does the technician do during an AC maintenance visit?**
The technician cleans the exterior condenser unit, inspects and tests the indoor evaporator coil, checks electrical connections, and runs operational tests to confirm the system is cooling efficiently.

**My AC is iced up or leaking water around the indoor unit — what should I do?**
A frozen coil can't be properly diagnosed. Turn the cooling off at the thermostat and set the fan to On to thaw the coil — usually 3-4 hours — before a technician assesses it.

**When can I book my AC maintenance in the spring?**
SMHC books AC maintenance from mid-to-late May onward. Outdoor temperatures need to sit consistently above 15°C for a technician to test the unit accurately.

**When should I book my furnace maintenance?**
Book furnace maintenance in the fall, before the heating season begins.

**Is it safe to keep running my AC if it's acting up?**
If it's cooling normally, you can run it. If it's iced up or leaking water, turn it off and let it thaw first. If it makes a loud grinding or catching noise, shut it off and call us — running it low on refrigerant or with a blockage risks further damage.

**Can I clean my outdoor AC unit myself — will it void the warranty?**
Clearing dust off the outdoor condenser won't void your warranty. Be careful: don't use a pressure washer or harsh methods, as the coil fins are delicate and easily bent.

**Does my AC refrigerant need to be topped up every year?**
No — refrigerant shouldn't need regular topping up. If a unit is low, it's usually due to age, wear, or a leak, which we'd diagnose and repair.

**How often should I change my filter?**
Check monthly; replace disposables at least every 3 months. Washable filters should be cleaned at least monthly (more often for pet owners). A dirty filter causes premature breakdowns, higher bills, and more dust and allergens.

**Where is my filter located?**
Most homes in our area have up-flow furnaces — the filter is on the left or right side between the furnace and the return air boot.

**What is the average lifespan of HVAC equipment?**
10-20 years depending on type and maintenance:
- Air conditioners and heat pumps: 12-15 years
- Boilers and furnaces: 12-20 years
- Water heaters: 10 years
- Tankless water heaters: 15-20 years

**How can I extend the life of my system?**
Replace filters on schedule. Use a programmable or smart thermostat. Close blinds on sun-exposed windows in summer. A slightly undersized system that runs continuously is often more efficient than one that cycles on and off.

## Service Calls & Diagnostics

**Does the diagnostic fee cover the repair?**
No — the diagnostic is a separate step to find out what's wrong. If a repair is needed, you're always quoted for it upfront before any work proceeds.

**If I pay for a diagnostic and then decide to buy new equipment, is the fee credited?**
Yes — diagnostic jobs that result in the sale of new equipment are typically credited.

**How soon can you come out, and what if the wait is long?**
During the busiest periods, service calls are often booked about a week out and new installs around three weeks. Reserve the earliest date to hold your place — there's no cancellation fee if you find help sooner — and ask to be added to our cancellation list so we can move you up when a spot opens.

**Can I pick an exact appointment time, and will I get a heads-up before the technician arrives?**
Service visits are booked into morning or afternoon arrival windows rather than exact times — dispatch coordinates the day's schedule. You'll receive an automated "on my way" notification when the technician is headed to your home.

**Can the technician fix it the same day?**
We fix on site whenever we can — small issues like a blown fuse are handled during the visit. If specific parts have to be ordered, a return visit is needed to complete the repair.

**Can I order parts without a diagnostic?**
No — a diagnostic is required first so we can confirm exactly what's failing, and you're not left paying for the wrong part.

**Does SMHC sell furnace or AC parts to the public?**
No — SMHC does not sell parts over the counter.

**Does SMHC service island or water-access properties?**
Yes — SMHC does a lot of island work. On service calls, billing starts from the time the technician is picked up at the dock. Island jobs are daytime-only; after-hours technicians are not sent to islands.

**How is HVAC efficiency measured?**
SEER measures cooling output per dollar of electricity — higher SEER = more efficient operation.

**What temperature should I set my thermostat?**
Summer: 78-80°F. Winter: 70-72°F. Don't adjust more than 5° when away — the system works harder to recover.

**Should I close registers in unused rooms?**
No. HVAC systems are designed for a specific square footage. Closing registers disrupts airflow, makes the system work harder, and reduces efficiency.

**Why get a smart thermostat?**
Remote app control, occupancy-based scheduling, filter reminders, weather integration. Some models learn your preferences and auto-adjust.

**Are washable filters better than disposables?**
Washable filters are more eco-friendly but need monthly cleaning. Disposables are simpler — replace every 1-3 months.

**Electric vs gas water heater — which is better?**
Electric: no venting loss, works in tight spaces, but won't run during a power outage. Gas: typically cheaper to operate if natural gas is available at the home.

**What size system do I need?**
There's no rule of thumb — 1 ton of AC can cool 300-800 sq ft depending on insulation and construction. A system that's too large short-cycles, hurting both efficiency and humidity removal. The only way to get it right is an in-home evaluation.

**Can SMHC do basic electrical for HVAC?**
ACs and heat pumps: branch circuit wiring from panel to outdoor unit, and hookup to an existing breaker — but we cannot place or move breakers. Furnaces: wiring from furnace to customer switch. Anything beyond that is off limits.

**Does SMHC service wood-fired equipment?**
No — requires WETT Certification our techs don't have. For wood-fired boilers we can work on the hydronic side but not the boiler itself.

**Does SMHC provide plumbing services?**

Plans are built around one primary piece of equipment; additional units — a second furnace or boiler, an AC, a water heater — are added to the same plan as lower-cost add-ons.

**Does SMHC offer financing?**
Yes — SMHC provides financing. Ask us about our promotions!

**Does SMHC handle rebates?**
Yes — SMHC handles HRSP (Home Renovation Savings Program) rebates. We check your eligibility and complete the paperwork, and you'll know your approved grant amount before installation. Note: installing before the government approves the rebate voids it, so we wait for approval to proceed.

**How long does the HRSP rebate cheque take to arrive?**
After installation, SMHC files the final paperwork and the HRSP rebate is paid within 60 days. (This is separate from the pre-install approval — your grant amount is confirmed before we install.)

**What payment methods does SMHC accept?**
Credit, debit, cash, cheque, and e-transfer. Invoices can be paid by the credit-card link in the invoice email or by e-transfer.

**Can I get one combined invoice for multiple visits or an insurance claim?**
No — our billing system invoices per job or per payment installment (such as a 50/50 install split), so separate visits can't be merged onto a single invoice.

**How long does a refund take to appear?**
Once SMHC processes a refund, it typically takes 10-15 business days to show on a Visa or Mastercard statement, depending on your bank.

**What if I need service outside business hours?**
Yes — SMHC has technicians on-call 24/7.

**How does after-hours emergency service work if you're fully booked?**
Call the main office after 5 p.m. (or on weekends) to be placed in our on-call queue. It's first-come, first-served, and you only need to call once to hold your place — you don't lose your spot by waiting. Emergencies like no cooling during a heatwave are prioritized.

**What kind of HVAC system should I get?**
It depends on your home, budget, and efficiency goals. A free in-home estimate is the best way to figure out what fits.

**Are estimates really free?**
Yes — SMHC's in-home estimate is free with no obligation. A comfort advisor assesses your sizing, ductwork, return airs, and square footage before recommending options.

**Can a heat pump completely replace my furnace in winter?**
We recommend keeping a supplemental heat source, such as a furnace, alongside a heat pump. Heat pumps are excellent in milder weather but struggle to keep up when temperatures drop to -20 or -30.
